January has almost passed, the new semester has arrived, and with it comes a two-week Chinese New Year holiday.

During the Spring Festival, some high students might take some extra lessons in order to improve their academic scores. Our junior classmates may tend to replenish themselves and restore energy for the forthcoming semester.

Whatever the prelude or the main theme of life, studying is a subject cared by all of us. We want to share some techniques that help us maintain our academic passion.

Some people might expect to have a long, efficient study time: waking up at seven o’clock, sitting in a self-study room until twelve o’clock. However, one scientific study method is to divide our learning time into several periods of 40 minutes to 1 hour and set a break time between 2 periods. Thus, we can keep the balance of work and rest, maintain high efficiency of learning, and not become desolate about the infinite homework.

If you lack academic passion, you can construct your mindset based on your own personality. You can always set yourself a little goal. For example, if you get straight A's in January, you can buy yourself something which you were eager to buy but didn't, such as a graphics card or a necklace, or you can have a vacation. For someone who lives without material desires, you can tell yourself that a good grade is the foundation of a good future.

Thirdly, be responsible to yourself. I will take my laptop to ReachTop, a linguistic learning institution, I will usually choose to sit beside the teacher because I think that I lack self-discipline and it is necessary for one of the teachers to regulate my behavior. However, the result was not ideal, my efficiency was not improved.

But once, I was instructed to study by myself in a separate room. There are few chances for teachers to supervise me in this place. I did everything based on my self-discipline. However, what was totally out of my expectation, I was extraordinarily focused during the study time without the control of teachers. I was not affected by any distractions at all.

In my opinion, the main reason for what happened is that when I am supervised by others, I believe that I am studying for them instead of studying for myself. But when I realize that I should make a decision all by myself, I deeply know that I should take full responsibility for myself and put all effort into making the right decisions without hesitation.

Our speech is over, thanks for your attention.

Dear:

I Agree or not agree: the next twenty years from now on, students will not use printed books any more.

I don't think so. printed books won't be abandoned in such a short time. I admit that new technology is developing fast. Many advanced electronic products are gradually take the place of traditional tools. Just like in university, teachers like to use multimedia in class for it is quite convenient and efficient. However, for our student, it is not realistic to study completely by electronic products. There are many things need to recorded on books. Books are something meaningful and practical.

I should say, in our country, printed books wouldn't be abandoned within 20 years at least for two reasons. Firstly, books are classical container of knowledge. They accompany human to advance. A student without books could be someway ridiculous. Secondly, our country haven't developed so strong to make every student study by computer or other forms of electronic tools. And even after 20 years, the possibility is also very small. I also think it is unnecessary because books are cheap but useful and still meaningful.

Last year when I was here, I was speaking to you about a swim which I did across the North Pole.

And while that swim took place three years ago, I can remember it as if it was yesterday.

I remember standing on the edge of the ice, about to dive into the water, and thinking to myself, I have never ever seen any place on this earth which is just so frightening.

The water is completely water is minus 1.7 degrees centigrade, or 29 degrees 's flipping freezing in that water.

And then a thought came across my mind: if things go pear-shaped on this swim, how long will it take for my frozen body to sink the four and a half kilometers to the bottom of the ocean?

And then I said to myself, I've just got to get this thought out of my mind as quickly as possible.

And the only way I can dive into that freezing cold water and swim a kilometer is by listening to my iPod and really revving myself up,能讓我扎入 這冰冷的水裏 然後遊了4千米的唯一方法就是 聽着我的iPod,讓我自己全力運轉起來,

listening to everything from beautiful opera all the way across to Puff Daddy, and then committing myself a hundred percent -- there is nothing more powerful than the made-up mind --and then walking up to the edge of the ice and just diving into the water.

And that swim took me 18 minutes and 50 seconds, and it felt like 18 days.

And I remember getting out of the water and my hands feeling so painful and looking down at my fingers, and my fingers were literally the size of sausages because -- you know, we're made partially of water -- when water freezes it expands, and so the cells in my fingers had frozen and expandedand burst.

And the most immediate thought when I came out of that water was the following: I'm never, ever going to do another cold water swim in my life again.

Anyway, last year, I heard about the Himalayas and the melting of the -- (Laughter) and the melting of the glaciers because of climate change.

I heard about this lake, Lake Imja.

This lake has been formed in the last couple of years because of the melting of the glacier.

The glacier's gone all the way up the mountain and left in its place this big lake.

And I firmly believe that what we're seeing in the Himalayas is the next great, big battleground on this earth.

Nearly two billion people -- so one in three people on this earth -- rely on the water from the Himalayas.

And with a population increasing as quickly as it is, and with the water supply from these glaciers -- because of climate change --decreasing so much, I think we have a real risk of instability.

North, you've got China; south, you've India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, all these countries.

And so I decided to walk up to Mt. Everest, the highest mountain on this earth, and go and do a symbolic swim underneath the summit of Mt. Everest.

Now, I don't know if any of you have had the opportunity to go to Mt. Everest, but it's quite an ordeal getting up there.

28 great, big, powerful yaks carrying all the equipment up onto this mountain -- I don't just have my Speedo, but there's a big film crew who then send all the images around the world.28只巨大的犛牛 載着所有的儀器登上山峯 -- 我不僅僅帶這我的泳褲。

Dear:

Universities should abolish the practice of cutting off the electricity at dormitory at night.

I agree with it. As a student, I should say, university shouldn't cut off electricity at dormitory at night. The original intention for university to cut off electricity is to ensure our rest for some students will stay up very late if there is nothing to limit them. However, these students are minority. Most students have regular timetable. What more, we are now already in university, I think we should be treated like high school students any longer. Especially in summer hot days, no electricity at night would be a nightmare to all students. We can't fall asleep without electric fans. I can't just imagine that. Universities should think more for their students and trust their self-control.

I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many months of struggle and suffering. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word, it is victory. Victory at all costs—victory in spite of all terrors—victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no survival. Let that be realized, no survival for the British Empire, no survival for all that British Empire has stood for , no survival for the urge, the impulse of the ages, that mankind shall more forward toward his goal. I take up my task in buoyancy and hope. I feel sure that our cause will not be suffered to fail among men. I feel entitled at this juncture, at this time, to claim the aid of a

Dear:

My topic today is: word that has changed the world.

A word that has changed the world Education of their children is highly valued by parents. To get education in the universities abroad has been the dreams for both the parents and their children. To realize these dreams, the parents have to save a large amount of money for the studies, because international flights cost a lot. In addition, the tuition abroad is not cheap. Parents should also have to pay for the food, room and utilities for their children at the school abroad. The children also need some money for the entertainment and social events. The clothing will cost quite a little. Besides, they need extra money to cover some unexpected expenses, like long-distance calls and so on.

All in all, the parents should check out how much the living and tuition will cost for their children to study abroad. They should get prepared in advance.

Thank you .

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to e. Everything else is secondary.

In order to achieve this goal, he one day told them to bring him a bundle of sticks to. When they haddone, he has placed the faggot in the hands of each of them, and ordered them to break it in pieces. They each tried with all their strength, and were not able to do.

Then he untied the bundle of sticks, one by one, and again put them into their hands, thus, they easily broke. And he said to them:" the children! man’s dearest possession is life. it is given to him but once, and he must live it so as to feel no torturing regrets for wasted years, never know the burning shame of a mean and petty past; so live that, dying, he might say: all my life, all my strength were given to the finest cause in all the world—the fight for the liberation of mankind.

happiness lies not in the mere possession of money, it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative efforts, the joy and moral stimulation of work no longer must be forgotten in the mad chase of evanescent profits. these dark days, my friends, will be worth all they cost us, if they teach us that our true destiny is not to be ministered on to , but to minister to ourselves, to our fellow men.

e or disagree: Museums should be made my eyes, museums of course should be made free.

We know that, as a part of culture, museums restore many culture relics. These are typical symbols for a certain times. As a citizen of our country, it is necessary and natural to learn our past history. Recent years, more and more museums are open free to the public. I couldnt agree more with it. Free museum will greatly motivate all kinds of people to approach. Whats more, in this fast developing age, museums have many new and advanced invents inside. It will be a wonderful place for people who want to learn more. Parents can often take their children to museums to learn about history and some technical knowledge. In a word, I think government should try to make more museums free for citizens.

e or disagree: Zoos should be banned.

Nowadays, lots of people start to realize that zoos are not a good place for animals. People need zoos because it is an easy way to close the animals and also because its convenient for people to observe them. However, zoos are in fact a cruel place for animals. Animals should live in their natural habitat. An animals natural instinct is to run and to hunt. But thats not for animals kept in zoos. Everyday, people feed them. Theyve never been taught how to hunt for food and will gradually lose their natures. That will be quite cruel for a animal, especially for wild animals such as tigers and lions. You can often find in zoos that a tiger kept in cage has a loose expression in its set animals in zoos and therefore feel that they wont meet danger and may be able to protect them from dying out. This may be just a excuse we find for ourselves to make animals in cages just as entertainment. We always say animals are our friends, then why we put our friends in cages?

Dear:

Today I am very glad to be here to share with you my ideas of success. What is success? It is what everyone is longing times success would be rather simple. Winning a game is success; getting a high grade in the exam is success; making a new friend is success; even now I am standing here giving my speech is somehow also success.

However, as a person’s whole life is concerned, success becomes very complicated. Is fortune success? Is fame success? Is high social status success? No, I don’t think so. I believe success is the realization of people’s hopes and days, in the modern society there are many people who are regarded as the successful. And the most obvious characteristics of hem are money, high position and luxurious life. So most people believe that s success and all that they do is for this purpose. But the problem is wether it is real success. We all know there are always more money, higher position and better condition in front of us. If we keep chasing them, where is the end? What will satisfy us at last? Therefore, we can see, to get the real Success we must need something inside, which is the realization of people’ hopes and ideals.

Different people have different ideas about success; cause people’s hopes and ideas vary from one another. But I am sure every success is dear to everybody, cause it is not easy to come by, cause in the process of our striving for success, we got both our body and soul tempted, meanwhile we are enlightened by the most valuable qualities of human beings: love, patient, courage and sense of responsibility. These are the best treasures. So now I am very proud that I have this opportunity to stand here speaking to all of you. It is my success, cause I raise up to challenge my hope.

What is success? Everyone has his own interpretation as I do. But I am sure every success leads to an ever-brighter future. So ladies and gentlemen, believe in our hopes, believe in ourselves, we, every one of us, can make a successful life! Wish you all good success!

What fear can teach us

One day in 1819, 3,000 miles off the coast of Chile, in one of the most remote regions of the Pacific Ocean, 20 American sailors watched their ship flood with seawater.

They'd been struck by a sperm whale, which had ripped a catastrophic hole in the ship's hull. As their ship began to sink beneath the swells, the men huddled together in three small whaleboats.

These men were 10,000 miles from home, more than 1,000 miles from the nearest scrap of land. In their small boats, they carried only rudimentary navigational equipment and limited supplies of food and water.

These were the men of the whaleship Essex, whose story would later inspire parts of "Moby Dick."

Even in today's world, their situation would be really dire, but think about how much worse it would have been then.

No one on land had any idea that anything had gone wrong. No search party was coming to look for these men. So most of us have never experienced a situation as frightening as the one in which these sailors found themselves, but we all know what it's like to be afraid.

We know how fear feels, but I'm not sure we spend enough time thinking about what our fears mean.

As we grow up, we're often encouraged to think of fear as a weakness, just another childish thing to discard like baby teeth or roller skates.

And I think it's no accident that we think this way. Neuroscientists have actually shown that human beings are hard-wired to be optimists.

So maybe that's why we think of fear, sometimes, as a danger in and of itself. "Don't worry," we like to say to one another. "Don't panic." In English, fear is something we conquer. It's something we fight.

It's something we overcome. But what if we looked at fear in a fresh way? What if we thought of fear as an amazing act of the imagination, something that can be as profound and insightful as storytelling itself?

It's easiest to see this link between fear and the imagination in young children, whose fears are often extraordinarily vivid.

When I was a child, I lived in California, which is, you know, mostly a very nice place to live, but for me as a child, California could also be a little scary.

I remember how frightening it was to see the chandelier that hung above our dining table swing back and forth during every minor earthquake, and I sometimes couldn't sleep at night, terrified that the Big One might strike while we were sleeping.

And what we say about kids who have fears like that is that they have a vivid imagination. But at a certain point, most of us learn to leave these kinds of visions behind and grow up.

We learn that there are no monsters hiding under the bed, and not every earthquake brings buildings down. But maybe it's no coincidence that some of our most creative minds fail to leave these kinds of fears behind as adults.

The same incredible imaginations that produced "The Origin of Species," "Jane Eyre" and "The Remembrance of Things Past," also generated intense worries that haunted the adult lives of Charles Darwin, Charlotte Bront and Marcel Proust. So the question is, what can the rest of us learn about fear from visionaries and young children?

Well let's return to the year 1819 for a moment, to the situation facing the crew of the whaleship Essex. Let's take a look at the fears that their imaginations were generating as they drifted in the middle of the Pacific.

Twenty-four hours had now passed since the capsizing of the ship. The time had come for the men to make a plan, but they had very few options.

In his fascinating account of the disaster, Nathaniel Philbrick wrote that these men were just about as far from land as it was possible to be anywhere on Earth.

The men knew that the nearest islands they could reach were the Marquesas Islands, 1,200 miles away. But they'd heard some frightening rumors.

They'd been told that these islands, and several others nearby, were populated by cannibals. So the men ashore only to be murdered and eaten for dinner. Another possible destination was Hawaii, but given the season, the captain was afraid they'd be struck by severe storms.

Now the last option was the longest, and the most difficult: to sail 1,500 miles due south in hopes of reaching a certain band of winds that could eventually push them toward the coast of South America.

But they knew that the sheer length of this journey would stretch their supplies of food and water. To be eaten by cannibals, to be battered by storms, to starve to death before reaching land.

These were the fears that danced in the imaginations of these poor men, and as it turned out, the fear they chose to listen to would govern whether they lived or died.

Now we might just as easily call these fears by a different name. What if instead of calling them fears, we called them stories?

Because that's really what fear is, if you think about it. It's a kind of unintentional storytelling that we are all born knowing how to do. And fears and storytelling have the same components.

They have the same architecture. Like all stories, fears have characters. In our fears, the characters are us. Fears also have plots. They have beginnings and middles and ends. You board the plane.

The plane takes off. The engine fails. Our fears also tend to contain imagery that can be every bit as vivid as what you might find in the pages of a novel. Picture a cannibal, human teeth sinking into human skin, human flesh roasting over a fire.

Fears also have suspense. If I've done my job as a storyteller today, you should be wondering what happened to the men of the whaleship Essex. Our fears provoke in us a very similar form of suspense.

Just like all great stories, our fears focus our attention on a question that is as important in life as it is in literature: What will happen next?

In other words, our fears make us think about the future. And humans, by the way, are the only creatures capable of thinking about the future in this way, of projecting ourselves forward in time, and this mental time travel is just one more thing that fears have in common with storytelling.

As a writer, I can tell you that a big part of writing fiction is learning to predict how one event in a story will affect all the other events, and fear works in that same way.

In fear, just like in fiction, one thing always leads to another. When I was writing my first novel, "The Age Of Miracles," I spent months trying to figure out what would happen if the rotation of the Earth suddenly began to slow down. What would happen to our days?

What would happen to our crops? What would happen to our minds? And then it was only later that I realized how very similar these questions were to the ones I used to ask myself as a child frightened in the night.

If an earthquake strikes tonight, I used to worry, what will happen to our house? What will happen to my family? And the answer to those questions always took the form of a story.

There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, “Morning, boys. How's the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, “What the hell is water?”

Simple awareness; awareness of what is so real and essential, so hidden in plain sight all around us, all the time, that we have to keep reminding ourselves over and over:

“This is water.”

“This is water.”

It is unimaginably hard to do this, to stay conscious and alive in the adult world day in and day out.
