英語成語(idiom)是英語的核心與精華。其內容豐富，寓意深刻，具有濃厚的感情色彩。如果能在文章、談話或對外交往中，恰當地加以運用，會大大增加語言的表達能力，收到良好的效果。英語諺語是英語語言的精華，是英國藝術寶庫的瑰麗明珠。英語諺語的句式特點是句式簡單，語言精煉，富於形象比喻，充滿濃郁的民族色彩。學習和研究英語諺語有助於啟迪思想，開拓視野，瞭解英國的歷史文化、風土人情，以及英國人民的人生哲理，同時還可以學到生動活潑的大眾語言。

本文通過比較英漢成語及諺語這兩種語言的相似及不同之處，詳細的介紹英語成語及諺語。第一部分主要從內容和形式兩方面談談英語成語及諺語的基本特色;第二部分談及英語成語及諺語的一般翻譯方法和翻譯時應該注意的一些問題。
