拜年是中國民間的傳統習俗，是人們辭舊迎新、相互表達美好祝願的一種方式。

古時"拜年"一詞原有的含義是為長者拜賀新年，包括向長者叩頭施禮、祝賀新年如意、問候生活安好等內容。遇有同輩親友，也要施禮道賀。

拜年一般從家裏開始。七年級早晨，晚輩起牀後，要先向長輩拜年，祝福長輩健康長壽，萬事如意。長輩受拜以後，要將事先準備好的"壓歲錢"分給晚輩。在給家中長輩拜完年以後，人們外出相遇時也要笑容滿面地恭賀新年，互道"恭喜發財"、"四季如意"、"新年快樂"等吉祥的話語，左右鄰居或親朋好友亦相互登門拜年或相邀飲酒娛樂。宋人孟元老在《東京夢華錄》卷六中描寫北宋汴京時雲："十月一日年節，開封府放關撲三日，士庶自早相互慶賀。"明中葉陸容在《菽園雜記》卷五中説"京師元旦日，上自朝官，下至庶人，往來交錯道路者連日，謂之'拜年'。然士庶人各拜其親友多出實心。朝官往來，則多泛愛不專……"。清人顧鐵卿在《清嘉錄》中描寫，"男女以次拜家長畢，主者率卑幼，出謁鄰族戚友，或止遣子弟代賀，謂之'拜年'。至有終歲不相接者，此時亦互相往拜於門……。"

古時，倘或坊鄰親朋太多，難以登門遍訪，就使遣僕人帶名片去拜年，稱為"飛帖"，各家門前貼一紅紙袋，上寫"接福"兩字，即為承放飛帖之用。此俗始於宋朝上層社會。清人《燕台月令》形容北京年節："是月也，片子飛，空車走。"成為時尚。"大户人家特設"門簿"，以記客人的往來和飛片，門簿的首頁多虛擬"親到者"四人：一曰壽百齡老太爺，住百歲坊巷；一曰富有餘老爺，住元寶街；一曰貴無極大人，住大學士牌樓；一曰福照臨老爺，住五福樓。以圖吉利討口彩。至今的春節贈送賀年片、賀年卡，便是這種古代互送飛帖的遺風。

上層士大夫有用名帖互相投賀的習俗。宋人周輝在《清波雜誌》中説："宋元佑年間，新年賀節，往往使用傭僕持名刺代往"。當時士大夫交遊廣，若四處登門拜年，既耗費時間，也耗費精力，因此有些關係不大密切的朋友就不親自前往，而是派僕人拿一種用梅花箋紙裁成的二寸寬、三寸長，上面寫有受賀人姓名、住址和恭賀話語的卡片前往代為拜年。明代人們以投謁代替拜年。明朝傑出畫家、詩人文徵明在《賀年》詩中描述："不求見面惟通謁，名紙朝來滿蔽廬；我亦隨人投數紙，世憎嫌簡不嫌虛"。這裏所言的"名刺"和"名謁"即是現今賀年卡的起源。賀年卡用於聯絡感情和互致問候，既方便又實用，乃至今日仍盛行不衰。
