I Regain Confidence

I received a devastating blow to my self-confidence in the first interview of my college years. I applied to be a host in our Student Acting Troupe and felt confident that I would be accepted. But one of the panel members told me: "You seem inadequate and you are a little vertically-challenged." My life has never been the same since. I used bigger heels to complement my height and psychological maneuvers and tricks to hide my lack of confidence. But no matter how hard I tried to look the part, there was still something missing.

As president of English Club, I organized the rehearsal of Snow White for an English party. Unfortunately, we could not find an actor to be the last dwarf. It had to be someone who was humorous by nature and fluent in English. Suddenly, all eyes turned to me, and I knew I would have to be the dwarf. To my great surprise and delight, once on stage, I was totally absorbed in the performance and my humorous nature was put to full use. As the dwarf, I was a big hit.

Yes, each of us is only one among millions of others, but each of us is an individual and each of us is unique. Cultivating our individuality will transform our lives, making of them a kaleidoscope of new colors and textures.

A world deprived of diversity would be a bland and boring place. The real tragedy is not being short or shy or ugly, but having your identity lost in a world in which everyone is a clone of a model cool boy or a flawless charming girl.

Given a choice, I would rather be ugly than live in such a world. I'd rather be a genuine dwarf accompanying a Snow White than be a Snow White among nothing but Snow Whites. I would rather be myself. I would contribute my individual and unique colors to create a more diverse universe. Please, be yourself.

East and West have met

runner-up: Rui Cheng gang, Foreign Affair College

Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen:

Kipling said:" East is east, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet!" But now, a century later, they have met.

They have met in business. They have met in education. They have met in the arts.

Some would argue that these meetings leave us with a choice between East and West ,but I believe the best future lies in the creative combination of both worlds. We can make Western ideas, customs and technology our own, and adapt them to our own use. We can enjoy the best of all worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selecting the best and making it our own.

But, do Western styles and values threaten our identity?

History makes it easy for us to think so-perhaps too easy.

Some people seem to think that adopting Western customs, such as a bride wearing white-which has long been a color of mourning in China, instead of the traditional Chinese red for her wedding, is another submission to foreign intervention,--a betrayal of our heritage, they say.

They fear that as we become "globalized", we will no longer be Chinese.

I do not agree.

History teachers that a strong and confident nation is at ease in hearing from the outside world.

The wedding of Eastern and Western cultures, whether in white gowns or red, brings us variety.

It is a rich banquet of special foods from all over the world.

As an amateur gourmet of Chinese cuisine, our superb flavours delight me.

But my Chinese taste appreciates food from any land.

I even allow the convenience of McDonald's a place in my life without giving up my good taste.

My grandfather taught me to hum tunes of Beijing opera from the time I was very young; they are deep in my spirit, part of my soul.

I love Beijing opera, because it always reminds me of who I am.

But I am also a fan of modern pop music, the No.1 fan of Spice Girls on campus.

of course, it goes far beyond food, music and dance. It goes into values and ways of thinking about the world.

Once upon a time, or so my teacher told me, a Chinese boy and an American girl had a squabble.

Both wanted to keep a bunny rabbit they had found in the garden.

Surely you've seen a rabbit sunning himself in the grass.

Nothing is more lovable, nothing more natural. No wonder they wanted him. The Chinese boy played his er-hu. Happiness and joy, longing and passion, filled the air. The little rabbit swayed gently and began to move his ears in the direction of the music. He liked what he heard.

The girl then took out her violin and played it to produce beautiful melodies of her own.

The rabbit began to bounce in her direction.

So intent were the children on their own music that neither paid the other any attention.

The competing melodies confused the little rabbit and he did not know which way to turn le to attract the little creature, both children gave up ;they walked away, in different directions, leaving the rabbit. . e.

But, what if they listened ,what if they really heard each other's music, instead of always playing their own tunes?

When I hear the music of a violin ,rich with the joys of men and women who came together and sang and danced.. . I hear echoes of the music of the grass lands, of the hills, of the my own native land.

Is music mine and yours, or is it ours?

What I want to hear is the er-hu and the violin played together, in rhythm and in tune. Together, we can produce new and beautiful music, rich with textures and sounds that can only be made in harmony.

The rabbit sits in the grass in the ever-warming sun. Waiting for us to play, waiting for the symphony to begin.

Will he have to wait forever? The choice is ours . Thank you.

Me and my Fears

Honorable judges, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:

It is a great honor and pleasure to be here on this beautiful Saturday morning to share with you my sentiments about life and passion for the English language.

About a year and a half ago, I took part in my very first English Speech Contest. When I stood before the microphone with all eyes starring directly at me, I could hardly speak. I stood there, embarrassed and helpless, struggling in vain for the right thing to say. My fears had paralyzed me.

While my passion for English has never changed, I lost my courage to speak in public. When my professor again encouraged me to take part in this Competition, I said “no.” I couldn’t endure yet another painful experience. He looked me straight in the eye and said something that pierced my heart. I will never forget his words. “Look,” he said, “We all have our fears, and you have yours. You could twist your ankle in a basketball game, but then be afraid to ever play again. Running away can never dispel your fears, but action will. A winner is not one who never fails, but one who never quits.”

I spent a whole day with his words twisting and turning in my mind. Then I made the bravest and wisest decision of my life: I would face my fears – and take part in the competition!

As it turned out, my dear old professor was right. Now, here I am, once again standing before a microphone. My heart is beating fast, and my mouth is dry, but most importantly, I have faced my fears -- and that makes all the difference!

Thank you.

Helloeveryone! My name is Ren Qingwen. I am 8years old. I like drawing, reading, andtelling stories. Today I am telling you a story- The missing forest

The king wasvery old. Before he dead, he told the prince his last words,” I am very old now. The forest is our last hope. You willbe the new king. You couldn’t change the law, or a lot of monsters will come! Rememberit my son!”

And shortlyafterwards, the prince became the new king. And the country became stronger andstronger. He was a good king but he still grudged that law!

There is a big tree in the forest. Crows live in the tree.

There is a hole under the tree. There is a fox in the hole.

One day, the crow took a piece of meat and stood on the tree to rest. Thefox saw it.

The fox was greedy for the meat from the crow.

The fox could not get it under the tree because the crow had meat in itsmouth on the branch.

The coveting of meat made the fox unwilling to give up easily.

He turned his eyes and said, "Dear crow, how are you?" the crow did notanswer.

The fox had to smile and say, "Dear crow, how is your child?" the crowlooked at the fox, but did not answer.

The fox wagged his tail and spoke for the third time: "Dear crow, yourfeathers are so beautiful. Sparrow is far from you.

Your voice is very good. Everyone loves to hear you sing. Would you like tosing a few words? "The crow was very proud when he heard this: he said I have agood voice, and the only one who loves to hear me sing is you, the fox, so hesang happily.

As soon as he opened his mouth, the meat fell from his mouth.

The fox took the meat and went into the hole, leaving only the crows to"sing" there.

One night, I complained to my mom about the lack of time. Finally she said,"you are short of time just because you waste precious minutes on complaints and anxiety. The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard, you can always fit in some thing more."

It is the same with filling the jar. Even if you place a dozen fist-sized rocks and a bucket of gravel into the jar, there is still space for sand and water between the rocks and gravel.

The lack of time is just the excuse for my negligence of every single minute. I believe that the great dividing line between success and failure can be expressed in six words,"I did not have enough time."The fact is I do have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein. The point is I have never touched upon the real meaning of life which lies in snatching, seizing and enjoying every minute of it. No idleness, no delay, no procrastination, no complaint! It is during my moments of complaining or hesitation that my destiny is shaped. Once I make full use of every moment, I believe that, my worries will be gradually cut down to nothing.

Time is the most valuable of all our possessions, but the most perishable as well. As Henry David Thoreau said,"You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment."

Whenever I fell the lack of time in the future, I will tell myself "Carpe diem , seize the day, make every moment count."

Sports are more than competitions. To me, they mean growth under the care of others. I learned this the hard way.

I used to be very shy and often felt lonely. Although I did well in all the academic subjects, I was afraid of physical education. My classmates often laughed at me.

“Look at that girl,” they said. “Her feet don’t leave the ground when she runs!”

Their words embarrassed me. Moreover, whenever the teacher organized some competitive games, no one in the class liked to have me as their partner or team member. As a result, I often ended up looking at others enjoy their games.

Things would go on like that if not for a sports meet in my high school. By mistake, my name was put on the list of those who would compete in the women’s 1500 meters race. By the time people found the mistake, it was too late to change.

My desk-mate was a natural athlete. She said to me, “I couldn’t run that race in your place, because I’ve signed up for three items already.” Other athletic girls of the class said the same.

I was utterly dumbfounded. 1500 meters! Running against the best runners from other classes! And in front of students of the entire school! It would be the worst nightmare I’d ever have!

“You still have time to catch up because there is still one month before the sports meet,” they all said this to me, including my teacher.

My desk-mate patted me on the shoulder, “Cool! You will run for our class! And we will do training together.” Yes, this is not just for myself, but for my class too, I said to myself. But still, 1500 meters to me was like Mount Everest to a beginning climber. I had no idea even how to start my preparation.

Fortunately, my desk-mate gave me a hand. Every afternoon after class, several of us ran together. When the fear of being laughed at struck me, I saw others running right beside me. They gave me strengths. While we were running, some others would stand by the tracks cheering for us.

One month certainly couldn’t make me a good runner. But when I was standing behind the start line, I no longer felt lonely or afraid. I saw my classmates standing by the tracks waving at me as if about to run beside me.

With the shot of the starting gun, I dashed out and ran as fast as I could, as if it were a 200-meter race. Soon I was out of breath and slowed down. Other runners passed me one by one, and gradually I had no idea how many of them were still behind me. My legs were getting heavier and heavier, and I might fall down at any moment. However, I suddenly heard my classmates chanting my name. My desk-mate even ran along the tracks beside me and cheered for me at the same time, just like the month-long training we did together.

As expected, I was almost the last to cross the finish line. Immediately, my classmates held my arms and urged me to walk on my feet and not to sit down. I was surrounded, with all kinds of drinks handed to me. I felt a kind of warmth I had never felt before. Even though I was almost the last to finish the race, I was full of confidence that I would improve in the future.

That sports meet was an unforgettable experience. The memory of my classmates cheering for me, holding my arms and handing me drinks stays fresh on my mind. Sports are no longer about winning or losing. They give me a lot of confidence, both confidence in my fellow students and confidence in my own potential. I am no longer lonely, no longer afraid. Sports have brought me close to my classmates and helped us grow together.

Now, I participate in the sports meet every year. Even if I am not competing, I would help my classmates with their practice, just like the way my desk-mate and others ran with me.

honourable judges and friends,

good morning! i am very glad to be here to share my college life with you .

two years ago, i came into this city of and started my college life , the most memorable journey of my life. i was just a shy and little girl that time. all the things seemed fresh to me: new faces, large library and physics lab etc. i breathed the air of college greedily, i was curious about class given by the teachers are provide us with information not only from our textbook but from other sources as well.i actively involved in student union and varies of association. but soon i realized that i do not make full use of my spare time ,so i got a part-time job to help a junior student with math lessons besides,i also took part in activities concerning public welfare. we taught the kids there who could not afford school, i was deeply touched by their eagerness to learn, the precious experience with the poor kids made me aware of the responsibility on the shoulders of us--future teachers. the enrichment of experience taught me the significance of modesty, responsibility, tolerance, and perseverance.

and now i have been here two years. recalling to the two years, i think i have to talk about one thing--learning. learn how to study independently, learn how to get along with others, learn to love, learn to… oh, there are too much things we have to learn.

comparing with senior high school, college is a rather different place. there aren’t so many people to watch you and guide you how to do something any more, neither are there so many students who share with you one dream. in college, you must think and study yourself, so you have to learn and practice to control yourself.

another relationship in college is friendship. my roommates have lived two years with me. in these years, they forgive my faults, cry with me, laugh with me, play with me… they always stand with me and support me, i have learned a lot from them. i love them all and treasure the friendship with them.

in the next 2 years,i’ll try my best to and make great contributions to society! that’s my college life. i cherish all i have experienced in college. i love you, my college!

that’s all, thank you!

I believe it is in my nature to dance by virtue of the beat of my heart, the pulse of my blood and the music in my mind. So I dance daily.

The seldom-used dining room of my house is now an often-used ballroom — anopen space with a hardwood floor, stereo, and a disco ball. The CD-changer hassix discs at the ready: waltz, swing, country, rock-and-roll, salsa, andtango.

Each morning when I walk through the house on the way to make coffee, Iturn on the music, hit the "shuffle" button, and it's Dance Time! I dance aloneto whatever is playing. It's a form of existential aerobics, a movingmeditation.

Tango is a recent enthusiasm. It's a complex and difficult dance, so I'm upto three lessons a week, three nights out dancing, and I'm off to Buenos Airesfor three months of immersion in tango culture.

The first time I went tango dancing I was too intimidated to get out on thefloor. I remembered another time I had stayed on the sidelines, when the dancingbegan after a village wedding on the Greek island of Crete. The fancy footworkconfused me. "Don't make a fool of yourself," I thought. "Just watch."

Reading my mind, an older woman dropped out of the dance, sat down besideme, and said, "If you join the dancing, you will feel foolish. If you do not,you will also feel foolish. So, why not dance?"

And, she said she had a secret for me. She whispered, "If you do not dance,we will know you are a fool. But if you dance, we will think well of you fortrying."

Recalling her wise words, I took up the challenge of tango.

A friend asked me if my tango-mania wasn't a little ambitious. "Tango? Atyour age? You must be out of your mind!"

On the contrary: It's a deeply pondered decision. My passion for tangodisguises a fearfulness. I fear the shrinking of life that goes with aging. Ifear the boredom that comes with not learning and not taking chances. I fear thedying that goes on inside you when you leave the game of life to wait in thefinal checkout line.

I seek the sharp, scary pleasure that comes from beginning something new —that calls on all my resources and challenges my mind, my body, and my spirit, all at once.

My goal now is to dance all the dances as long as I can, and then to sitdown contented after the last elegant tango some sweet night and pass on becausethere wasn't another dance left in me.

So, when people say, "Tango? At your age? Have lost your mind?" I answer,"No, and I don't intend to."

Stepping into the new century environment pollution has become more serious than ever since. There are different kinds of pollution. Such as water pollution air pollution and noise pollution and so on. It seems that we live on a planet which is full of pollution. where all these pollution comes from? To a large extend the environmental destruction is the heavy price that we pay for the rapid development of economy and the growing population. In order to have more fuel people cut down trees and dig more corals. But the growing needs for energy are hardly to meet. Countless private cars on the street the gas stations are short of gasoline even the government has raise the price so many times in order to control the needs of gasoline but it’s still not working. Overusing the natural resources has already affected the ecological balance. However the factories still release the toxic air into the sky and the polluted water into the rivers. People still lack of the conscious of protecting the environment. I think it’s time for all of us to do something.

As food is to the body, so is learning to the mind. Our bodies grow and muscles develop with the intake of adequate nutritious food. Likewise, we should keep learning day by day to maintain our keen mental power and expand our intellectual capacity. Constant learning supplies us with inexhaustible fuel for driving us to sharpen our power of reasoning, analysis, and judgment. Learning incessantly is the surest way to keep pace with the times in the information age, and an infallible warrant of success in times of uncertainty.

Once learning stops, vegetation sets in. It is a common fallacy to regard school as the only workshop for the acquisition of knowledge. On the contrary, learning should be a never-ending process, from the cradle to the grave. With the world ever changing so fast, the cease from learning for just a few days will make a person lag behind. What's worse, the animalistic instinct dormant deep in our subconsciousness will come to life, weakening our will to pursue our noble ideal, sapping our determination to sweep away obstacles to our success and strangling our desire for the refinement of our character. Lack of learning will inevitably lead to the stagnation of the mind, or even worse, its fossilization, Therefore, to stay mentally young, we have to take learning as a lifelong career.

Teachers ladies and gentlemen fellow cashman each female Sir good afternoon (morning).

The topic of my speech is "let didnt fight obesity"!

As we all know the four most beautiful women in ancient China: sink fish xi shi close your month the sable cicada wild goose zhaojun shame to spend Yang. Four big beautiful women there are three willow slender waist graceful but Yang height 1 meter 64 the weight be 138 catties.

Datang fat as beauty datang emperor and Yang are all very favorite godson troops stationed height less than 1 meter 8 the weight be 330 catties.

Yang troops stationed belong to obesity. The medical definition of obesity is that a certain degree of obvious overweight fat layer too thick is the body fat especially triglycerides accumulation is overmuch and lead to a state. Obesity can cause human pathology physiology psychological change is a disorder of latent factors.

Whether their obesity the simplest method comparison method is height and weight minus 30 adult male height minus 50 adult female height is basically equal to the standard weight. Such as troops stationed 1 meter 8 minus 30 is equal to 150 catties. Such as Yang 1 meter 64 minus 50 equal to 114 catties. The 150 and 114 and relative to their height even the standard weight.

Teacher please everyone here oneself measure is overweight. Multiple QiBaJin of course a QiBaJin less also calculate normal. (this can be a slight pause 10 to 20 seconds smile to observe the teachers to measure)

Obesity is generally divided into two categories category because of illness taking hormone cause the endocrine disorder cause obesity. This fat known as symptomatic of obesity. This kind of obese patients accounted for about 5% of the obesity.

Another type of obesity is eating too much eating quantity of heat more than itself heat consumption excess fat accumulated in the body form the fat cells lead to obesity this type of fat is called simple obesity. This kind of obesity more than 90% of the total number of obese people. We beat the main obesity.

The causes of the obesity there are the following:

(1) genetic factors caused by obesity

General parents obesity the possibility of children obesity is big;

(2) the unreasonable diet structure caused by obesity

Mainly due to partial obesity;

(3) too little movement lead to obesity

Modern habits affluent and comfortable living environment the lack of sports consciousness lack of exercise behavior. Some people in particular after the meal down on the bed lay or after a meal a long time sit in front of computers TV sets a sit for hours rarely rarely movement become a otaku women don't go out for a long time "ma3 wu2 ye4’s grass isn't fat" eat sleep eat sitting not fat just strange!

(4) medicial is also the important reason for the obesity

Medicial make human body in the liver spleen kidney dysfunction stocks and so on can't redundant adipose is converted into heat discharge heat deposition in the body cause obesity;

(5) spiritual factors is also one reason for the obesity

As the saying goes: "laugh and grow fat." No thought burden eat sweet digestion absorption also very good. Or "sorrow" eating and drinking these can make heat soar lead to obesity.

We know the definition of obesity we know that the standard of the obesity we know the causes of obesity standards and reasons and suit the remedy to the case the best prescription in addition to the diet not partial eclipse is movement is strong and handsome.

Diet not partial eclipse is very simple hun vegetable collocation is good or bad to eat Chinese food to eat for breakfast dinner only eat my follow this is ok. Best don't "snack" horses have ye4’s grass isn eat satisfied to sleep must fatten up.

Sports fitness is also very simple choose their favorite sports develop early to bed and early to rise makes routine perseverance unceasingly life movement.

To bed early to put it bluntly it is morning early in the evening shut the computer off the TV it must be very simple. However a person as long as the simple one of the most simple little things for a long time for a long time stick to it he will very not easy!

Sports aerobics aerobics can let the muscle oxygen content increased the oxygen content increases can get higher protein in the blood protein were able to increase our number of immune cells and immune cells increases will enhance immunity. At the same time aerobic exercise help the body carcinogens toxic and harmful substances timely drain discharge Julius promote metabolism Julius to speed up the fat consumption there is conducive to mental health.

A person full of energy metabolism the body strong definitely helps with confidence definitely helps spirits certainly beneficial to emotional balance definitely helps the sun is shining definitely helps keep youth!

One of Hong Kong shadow habitat song and dance male star. Birth name orea 20 years height 1 meter 83 72-75 kg health spirit sunshine youth. Has Hong Kong reporter asked hello how are you how do you keep youth?

Hello how are you use English to answer the three tips: 1 smile; 2 peace of mind; 3 intense sport. (1 2 3 it's best to use English speak and then repeat in Chinese)

The three secret was indeed the young and middle-aged people keep the youth is the best medicine.

Smile always can give a person a kind of close to the feeling of affinity harmonious and kind is the manifestation of people and internal quality. The original Shanghai underworld eldest brother the mobsters said "wait have skill no temper." Comedian Hou Yuewen also said "ability is big small temper." Small temper temper show the image of course is the smile.

Peace of mind it is people's inner quality is to control yourself control your emotions. This belongs to emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is a person to myself and to others emotional evaluation adjustment and control ability. People with high emotional intelligence is good at to communicate with people good interpersonal relationship is not easy to own mood swings also not easy is at the mercy of others feelings. Former U.S. President George Bush said: you can transfer the mood you will be able to mobilize all!

Intense movement fundamentally let oneself healthy body healthy body can promote the psychological health physical and mental health can calm can keep smiling.

Between the three secret it is the dialectical unification relations contact each other promote each other. Of course for the elderly not to strenuous exercise simply select the appropriate gentle exercise.

So I want to shout loudly: movement is one of the most important! Go to the sports go to the fitness! Let the sports fitness to overcome!

So I want to actively advocate: body building is one of the most important! Go to the fitness the gym. Again beautiful face body beautiful than you!
