第一誤區就是把五種技能學習變成單一的看懂。大家知道我們習慣上把英語學習分解成五項技能,聽説讀寫譯。這樣分解是否科學,在此暫且不論,有不少學習者往往把是否看懂當成學習的標準。比如説,拿到一本口語教材,翻開幾頁一看,都看懂了,就認為太簡單了,對自己不合適。這裏的錯誤是把看懂代替了會説。看懂不等於會説。練習口語,內容不能難,目的是通過一些能看懂的內容來操練“上口”。也就是説,目的是讓學習者通過練習,自己能説出書中相關的內容。口語教材的優劣首先要看語言是否能學到,是否地道。

第二誤區是把知識當成技能。打個比方,假如你想學騎自行車。我給你一本題目叫“如何騎自行車”的書,把書從頭背到底,甚至倒背如流。這時你有了專家級的關於如何騎自行車的知識。但是你肯定不會騎。原因是騎自行車不是簡單的知識問題,它首先是一項技能。要學會一項技能,核心問題是練,光有書本知識是不行的。學外語當然比學騎自行車要複雜得多,但它首先也是一項技能,光看語法書,默背單詞是遠遠不夠的。必須練,要把知識變

成技能。知道不等於知道怎麼做,知道怎麼做不等於實際上會做。從知道怎麼做到實際會做中間有個反覆練習的環節,也就是苦功夫。學技能所遵循的原則是“做中得學”。

第三個誤區是速成心理。必須認識到,要想學好英語,非得下一番苦功不可。世界上沒有一個外國成年人不下苦功就能學好英語的。所謂的“速成”純屬無稽之談。學好英語沒有捷徑,只有方法的好壞。比如記英語單詞,低着頭拼着命地默寫,這就不是一個好辦法。好的方法是大聲地朗讀,反覆訓練發音器官和耳朵,把聲音銘刻在腦子裏。這樣既可以提高聽力,又可以改進口語發音,還記了單詞。默寫只是訓練了眼睛和手,可是它們不能替你聽和説。

第四個誤區是通過漢字記音。現在有人推廣通過漢字來記英語發音,如“古帝拜”記good-bye。甚至把這種做法作為成果出版請獎。這是極其錯誤的,後果也是極其嚴重的。大家千萬不要這麼做。錯誤的道理在本文有限的空間裏無法講清楚。

第五個誤區是重結果不重過程。應試教育是重結果,帶來的後果是整天做模擬題,找出打勾的規律。這是教育的大敵。質量和學習效果取決於學習過程。大家一定要遵照學習的規律,一步一個腳印地真學。只要學習對路,好的結果自然會有。

第六個誤區是對教師的依賴。大家要仔細揣摩我們常説的一句話:師傅領進門,修行在個人。這句話點出了學習的本質。任何一種學習,歸根結底是在學生自身,而不是在老師。

第七個誤區是缺乏系統性。現在市場上學英語的材料是鋪天蓋地。這是好事,但處理不好也會帶來不良的後果。今天用這個教材、明天換另一個教材,學習便失去了系統性。我不是説我們不 要換教材,不好的教材,不適合的教材就是要換。但不能總是換個不停。好的做法應該是選中一套教材,以它為主,其餘材料都作為補充材料。

我認為一個成功的學習者要具備下面6個要素。一是自信心,二是決心,三是毅力,四是自我管理,五是自我約束,六是求知的童心。我在這裏作些簡要説明。

先談自信心。如何樹立自信心有許多方法,我在這裏強調的是不能傷了自己的自信心。一定不要過高要求自己,不能看到別人嘰裏呱啦説英語,就覺得自己不行。要看到自己一點一滴的進步,要想到的是積沙成塔,積流成河,而不是一步登天。

第二是決心。我們往往是多次下決心而從不付諸行動。所以大家在下決心的時候要把決心變成具體的學習計劃。如制定周、月和學期計劃 甚至是哪一個時間段應該學完什麼內容都明確下來,通過這些計劃把決心變成行動。

第三是毅力。毅力就是説不能三天打魚,兩天曬網。這是學好外語的大忌。我們今天學到的新東西,都是貯存在我們大腦的臨時記憶裏。臨時記憶的東西有的只能保留幾秒鐘,最長的難以超過三天。假如你對貯存在臨時記憶裏的東西不進行再利用(recycling)。把它們從臨時記憶貯存到長期記憶中,大腦就會把它們自動清除掉(因為大腦要保護它自己,不能把所有的臨時信息都存着)。所以,一定要有反覆學習的毅力。這裏説的反覆學,不是説去機械地重複原來學的東西,而是創造性地使用學過的東西。如把原來的聽力變成朗讀,把原來的朗讀變成聽力等。

第四是自我管理。你們中的許多人都是一身數任的人,有工作上的責任,有家庭上的責任,有親朋好友的人際關係上的責任,等等。這些責任如果處理不好,都將跟你們的學習發生衝突。所以自我管理的能力顯得特別重要。

第五是自我約束的能力。你們中的許多人都是成年人,享有很高的自由度。在學習上你們沒有上課時間的約束和老師的約束,這既可以變成有利的條件,也可以變成不利的隱患。關鍵在你有沒有自我約束力。假如你是足球迷,你能抗拒住足球賽的誘惑而去做作業,你就有了自我約束力。

第六是求知的童心。兒童見到不知道的東西都想知道,不會的都想試一把,而且不厭其煩地問個沒完。假如我們學外語也有這顆求知的童心,我們就不怕學不好英語。你見到一樣東西,不妨就問自己英文怎麼説。不怕出醜,不厭其煩,孜孜不倦,你一定能夠學好英語。

我要強調的是,學好英語絕不是一個簡單的方法問題,而是一個“全人”的問題。所謂“全人”,英文叫"a whole person",就是素質全面的人。在此祝你們早日成為學好外語的一個全人。
