honorable judges, fellow students: good afternoon!

recently, ther is a heated debate in our society. the college students arethe beneficiaries of a rare privilege, who receive exceptional education atextraordinary places. but will we be able to face the challenge and supportourselves against all odds? will we be able to better the lives of others? willwe be able to accept the responsibility of building the future of ourcountry?

the cynics say the college students are the pampered lost generation, whichwould cringe at the slightest discomfort. but the cynics are wrong. the collegestudents i see are eagerly learning about how to live independently. we helpeach other clean the dormitory, go shopping and bargain together, and take parttime jobs to supplement our pocket money.

the cynics say we care for nothing other than grades; and we neglect theneed for character cultivation. but again, the cynics are wrong. we care deeplyfor each other, we cherish freedom, we treasure justice, and we seek truth. lastweek, thousands of my fellow students had their blood type tested in order tomake a contribution for the children who suffer from blood cancer.

as college students, we are adolescents at the critical turning point inour lives. we all face a fundamental choice: cynicism or faith, each willprofoundly impact our future, or even the future of our country. i believe inall my fellow classmates. though we are still inexperienced and even a littlebit childish. i believe that we have the courage and faith to meet any challengeand take on our responsibilities. we are preparing to assume newresponsibilities and tasks, and to use the education we have received to makeour world a better place. i believein our future.

Today I am very glad to be here to share with you my ideas of success. Whatis success? It is what everyone is longing times success would be rathersimple. Winning a game is success; getting a high grade in the exam is success;making a new friend is success; even now I am

standing here giving my speech is somehow also success.

However, as a person’s whole life is concerned, success becomes very

complicated. Is fortune success? Is fame success? Is high social statussuccess? No, I don’t think so. I believe success is the realization ofpeople’

s hopes and days, in the modern society there are manypeople

who are regarded as the successful. And the most obvious characteristics ofhem are money, high position and luxurious life. So most people believe that ssuccess and all that they do is for this purpose. But the problem is wether itis real success. We all know there are always more money, higher position andbetter condition in front of us. If we keep chasing them, where is the end? Whatwill satisfy us at last? Therefore, we can see, to get the real Success we mustneed something inside, which is the realization of

people’ hopes and ideals.

Different people have different ideas about success; cause people’s hopesand ideas vary from one another. But I am sure every success is dear toeverybody, cause it is not easy to come by, cause in the process of our strivingfor success, we got both our body and soul tempted, meanwhile we are enlightenedby the most valuable qualities of human beings: love, patient, courage and senseof responsibility. These are the best treasures. So now I am very proud that Ihave this opportunity to stand here speaking to all of you. It is my success, cause I raise up to challenge my hope.

What is success? Everyone has his own interpretation as I do. But I amsure

every success leads to an ever-brighter future. So ladies and gentlemen, believe in our hopes, believe in ourselves, we, every one of us, can make a

successful life! Wish you all good success!

When people find out I write about time management, they assume two is that I'm always on time, and I'm not. I have four small children, and Iwould like to blame them for my occasional tardiness, but sometimes it's justnot their fault. I was once late to my own speech on time management.

We all had to just take a moment together and savor that irony.

The second thing they assume is that I have lots of tips and tricks forsaving bits of time here and times I'll hear from magazines that aredoing a story along these lines, generally on how to help their readers find anextra hour in the day. And the idea is that we'll shave bits of time offeveryday activities, add it up, and we'll have time for the good stuff.

I question the entire premise of this piece, but I'm always interested inhearing what they've come up with before they call me. Some of myfavorites:doing errands where you only have to make right-hand turns.

我對這個説法持保留意見,不過我還是願意聽聽他們在找我之前有什麼想法。我最喜歡的幾個是:只完成那些只需要右轉的事;

Being extremely judicious in microwave usage: it says three tothree-and-a-half minutes on the package, we're totally getting in on the bottomside of that. And my personal favorite, which makes sense on some level, is toDVR your favorite shows so you can fast-forward through the commercials.

That way, you save eight minutes every half hour, so in the course of twohours of watching TV, you find 32 minutes to exercise.

Which is true. You know another way to find 32 minutes to exercise? Don'twatch two hours of TV a day, right?

Anyway, the idea is we'll save bits of time here and there, add it up, wewill finally get to everything we want to do. But after studying how successfulpeople spend their time and looking at their schedules hour by hour, I thinkthis idea has it completely backward.

We don't build the lives we want by saving time. We build the lives wewant, and then time saves itself.

Here's what I mean. I recently did a time diary project looking at 1,001days in the lives of extremely busy women. They had demanding jobs, sometimestheir own businesses, kids to care for, maybe parents to care for, communitycommitments -- busy, busy people.

I had them keep track of their time for a week so I could add up how muchthey worked and slept, and I interviewed them about their strategies, for mybook.

One of the women whose time log I studied goes out on a Wednesday night forsomething. She comes home to find that her water heater has broken, and there isnow water all over her basement. If you've ever had anything like this happen toyou, you know it is a hugely damaging, frightening, sopping mess.

So she's dealing with the immediate aftermath that night, next day she'sgot plumbers coming in, day after that, professional cleaning crew dealing withthe ruined carpet. All this is being recorded on her time log. Winds up takingseven hours of her week. Seven hours. That's like finding an extra hour in theday.

But I'm sure if you had asked her at the start of the week, "Could you findseven hours to train for a triathlon?" "Could you find seven hours to mentorseven worthy people?" I'm sure she would've said what most of us would've said, which is, "No -- can't you see how busy I am?" Yet when she had to find sevenhours because there is water all over her basement, she found seven hours.

And what this shows us is that time is highly elastic. We cannot make moretime, but time will stretch to accommodate what we choose to put into it.

And so the key to time management is treating our priorities as theequivalent of that broken water heater. To get at this, I like to use languagefrom one of the busiest people I ever interviewed. By busy, I mean she wasrunning a small business with 12 people on the payroll, she had six children inher spare time.

I was getting in touch with her to set up an interview on how she "had itall" -- that phrase. I remember it was a Thursday morning, and she was notavailable to speak with me. Of course, right?

But the reason she was unavailable to speak with me is that she was out fora hike, because it was a beautiful spring morning, and she wanted to go for ahike. So of course this makes me even more intrigued, and when I finally docatch up with her, she explains it like this. She says, "Listen Laura, everything I do, every minute I spend, is my choice."

And rather than say, "I don't have time to do x, y or z," she'd say, "Idon't do x, y or z because it's not a priority." "I don't have time," oftenmeans "It's not a priority."

If you think about it, that's really more accurate language. I could tellyou I don't have time to dust my blinds, but that's not true. If you offered topay me $100,000 to dust my blinds, I would get to it pretty quickly.

Since that is not going to happen, I can acknowledge this is not a matterof lacking time; it's that I don't want to do it. Using this language reminds usthat time is a choice. And granted, there may be horrible consequences formaking different choices, I will give you that.

But we are smart people, and certainly over the long run, we have the powerto fill our lives with the things that deserve to be there.

So how do we do that? How do we treat our priorities as the equivalent ofthat broken water heater?

Well, first we need to figure out what they are. I want to give you twostrategies for thinking about first, on the professional side: I'm suremany people coming up to the end of the year are giving or getting annualperformance reviews. You look back over your successes over the year, your"opportunities for growth." And this serves its purpose, but I find it's moreeffective to do this looking forward.

So I want you to pretend it's the end of next year. You're giving yourselfa performance review, and it has been an absolutely amazing year for youprofessionally. What three to five things did you do that made it so amazing? Soyou can write next year's performance review now.

And you can do this for your personal life, too. I'm sure many of you, likeme, come December, get cards that contain these folded up sheets of coloredpaper, on which is written what is known as the family holiday letter.

Bit of a wretched genre of literature, really, going on about how amazingeveryone in the household is,or even more scintillating, how busy everyone inthe household is. But these letters serve a purpose, which is that they tell yourfriends and family what you did in your personal life that mattered to you overthe year.

So this year's kind of done, but I want you to pretend it's the end of nextyear, and it has been an absolutely amazing year for you and the people you careabout. What three to five things did you do that made it so amazing? So you canwrite next year's family holiday letter now. Don't send it.

Please, don't send it. But you can write it. And now, between theperformance review and the family holiday letter, we have a list of six to tengoals we can work on in the next year.

And now we need to break these down into doable steps. So maybe you want towrite a family t, you can read some other family histories, get asense for the style. Then maybe think about the questions you want to ask yourrelatives, set up appointments to interview them. Or maybe you want to run a you need to find a race and sign up, figure out a training plan, and digthose shoes out of the back of the closet.

And then -- this is key -- we treat our priorities as the equivalent ofthat broken water heater, by putting them into our schedules first. We do thisby thinking through our weeks before we are in them.

I find a really good time to do this is Friday afternoons. Friday afternoonis what an economist might calla "low opportunity cost" time. Most of us are notsitting there on Friday afternoons saying, "I am excited to make progress towardmy personal and professional priorities right now."

But we are willing to think about what those should be. So take a littlebit of time Friday afternoon, make yourself a three-category priority list:career, relationships, self. Making a three-category list reminds usthat thereshould be something in all three categories.

Career, we think about; relationships, self -- not so much. But anyway, just a short list, two to three items in each. Then look out over the whole ofthe next week, and see where you can plan them in.

Where you plan them in is up to you. I know this is going to be morecomplicated for some people than others. I mean, some people's lives are justharder than others. It is not going to be easy to find time to take that poetryclass if you are caring for multiple children on your own. I get that. And Idon't want to minimize anyone's struggle. But I do think that the numbers I amabout to tell you are empowering.

There are 168 hours in a week. Twenty-four times seven is 168 hours. Thatis a lot of time. If you are working a full-time job, so 40 hours a week, sleeping eight hours a night, so 56 hours a week -- that leaves 72 hours forother things. That is a lot of time.

You say you're working 50 hours a week, maybe a main job and a side , that leaves 62 hours for other things. You say you're working 60 , that leaves 52 hours for other things. You say you're working more than 60hours. Well, are you sure?

There was once a study comparing people's estimated work weeks with timediaries. They found that people claiming 75-plus-hour work weeks were off byabout 25 hours.

You can guess in which direction, right? Anyway, in 168 hours a week, Ithink we can find time for what matters to you.

If you want to spend more time with your kids, you want to study more for atest you're taking, you want to exercise for three hours and volunteer for two,you can. And that's even if you're working way more than full-time hours.

So we have plenty of time, which is great, because guess what? We don'teven need that much time to do amazing things. But when most of us have bits oftime, what do we do? Pull out the phone, right?Start deleting emails. Otherwise,we're puttering around the house or watching TV.

But small moments can have great power. You can use your bits of time forbits of joy. Maybe it's choosing to read something wonderful on the bus on theway to work.

I know when I had a job that required two bus rides and a subway ride everymorning, I used to go to the library on weekends to get stuff to read. It madethe whole experience almost, almost, enjoyable. Breaks at work can be used formeditating or praying. If family dinner is out because of your crazy workschedule, maybe family breakfast could be a good substitute.

It's about looking at the whole of one's time and seeing where the goodstuff can go. I truly believe e is time. Even if we are busy, we havetime for what matters. And when we focus on what matters, we can build the liveswe want in the time we've got.

Thank you.

If you ask me what is the most precious, I would say that it’s time. Timeis something once lost, you could never have again.

Sincc I entered college I have felt a great burden off my mind and I justwant to relax.I did too many meaningless things to kill my time, such as playingcomputer games, watching TV, or gossiping. When i do these things, the time haslong been unwittingly flowed away. I seldom work on my lessons unless there isan examination. Then i work under pressure. I know it is not good, but what Ilack is self control.I know it is a problem, and it is time i did somethingabout it.

In my opinion, the best way to make full use of time is planning your timerationally and sticking the plan firmly. Spending more time on somethingsignificant not only will make your life fulfilling, but also will give you asense of accomplishment. Instead, killing your time with meaningless thingswould bring you depression even despair. Remember that those who abandon timewill be also abandoned by time.

As youth, we are in the prime of our life. We should make good use of ourgolden time. The teachers take pains to teach us every day so that we canacquire more knowledge. We study in the university and spending money that ourparents work hard to earn 。Parents hope we can learn knowledge in theuniversity. We should not fail their expectations. I should not rest contentwith what I have done. Entering cnllege is just a step in the threshold of thepalace of knowledge. The road is long. The modern age needs the well future world is highly competitive. If we idle away our time while young woshall regret it in vain when we are did.

Therefore, we should cherish it and spend it in meaningful things.

Time waits for no one. If it flows away, it will never come to us again. Wecan't take charge of our time but we should know the importance of time andcherish time.
