1985年1月，國務院在全國人大會上提出建立教師節的議案，全國人大會通過了這一議案，確定每年的9月10日為教師節，1985年9月10日為新中國的第37個教師節。

早在1932年，民國政府曾規定6月6日為教師節，解放後廢除了6月6日的教師節，改用“五一國際勞動節”為教師節，但教師節沒有單獨的活動，沒有特點。而將教師節定在9月10日是考慮到全國大、中、國小新學年開始，學校要有新的氣象。新生入學開始，即尊師重教，可以給“教師教好、學生學好”創造良好的氣氛。1985年9月10日，是中國恢復建立第37個教師節，從此以後，老師便有了自己的節日。
