那麼金鞭溪究竟是一條什麼樣的峽谷呢?著名文學界沈從文先生讚譽她是“張家界的少女”，當年張家界的宣傳者----著名畫家吳冠中先生在此曾讚歎她是“一片童話般的世界”，現在就請大家跟隨我，沿着吳老和沈老當年的足跡去揭開金鞭溪神祕的面紗吧!

請大家注意看左邊這些奇特的植物，它就是國家一級保護植物——珙桐。珙桐是多年生木本花卉，通常在春末夏初的時節開花，花呈白色，柱頭上略帶一點紫紅，很像鴿子的頭和嘴，花身有兩片又大又長的苞片，像是一對翅膀，整個花朵的形狀就像一隻放飛的鴿子。這是我國特有的珍貴樹種。因而，外國人親切的稱它為“中國鴿子花”。

現在大家請看眼前峽谷的兩旁，這種高大而華貴的塔形樹。這也是國家一級保護植物——水杉。水杉是一種非常古老的樹種。人們曾經以為已經在第四季冰川襲擊時期絕跡了。然而，1941年，我國的植物學家在四川省的萬縣磨刀溝發現了它。1982年，開發張家界時，人們發現這裏長着大面積的水杉及3000多種的珍奇植物。這真是大自然賜予的一筆巨大的財富啊。

大家請往右邊看，前面這一座高聳入雲的石柱，這就是聞名遐邇的金鞭巖，而金鞭溪就是因為常年流經此巖而得名的。它高378米，方方正正，上細下粗，稜角分明，如同一隻高舉的鋼鞭，直指雲霄，令人望而生畏，加上其巖石結構為紅色石英砂巖和石灰巖，在陽光照射下，金光閃閃，故名金鞭巖。金鞭巖是整個張家界景區最高，最陡，最壯觀的石峯，人們稱讚它是“名山大川處處有，唯有金鞭奇上奇”!
